Today Republic of Armenia Prime Minister Andranik Margaryan has received Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations, Assistant Coordinator of the United Nations Development Program, Director of UNDP Regional Bureau for Europe and the CIS Ms. Kori Udovicki. The delegation headed by Ms Udovicki included Ms. Louise Vinton, Director of the Caucasus Bureau.
Emphasizing the importance of this visit paid to our country by such a representative delegation from the United Nations, the Prime Minister said that since its membership of the United Nations in 1992, the adoption of universal values and the acknowledgement of the protection of human rights and the abidance by democratic principles as necessary prerequisites for our statehood, Armenia has been actively involved in the activities carried out within the framework of this authoritative international organization through cooperation with its different bodies and agencies. In his opinion, based on the experience forged over the past few years, Armenia is prepared now to provide more effective cooperation and involvement. Andranik Margaryan emphasized that Armenia was of very high opinion of the Human Development Reports prepared with the assistance of the UNDP as they raised the awareness of the international community concerning the human development status in the transitional period. Numerous programs with a total budget of USD 21 million have been carried out in our country by the UNDP Armenia Office since its establishment in 1993. Today the UNDP provides invaluable assistance to the Government of Armenia with the implementation of the Millenium Development Program and the efforts for reduction of poverty up till 2015. The Prime Minister emphasized those programs to realize in the border regions of Armenia during 2006-2008, as well as the already completed activities and the redesign of the 2005-2009 programs.
Andranik Margaryan said to be convinced that without the effective assistance received from different UN agencies, it would be much more difficult to develop and carry out the government programs on poverty reduction, combating corruption, protection of women
