The jubilee commission on preparation of celebrations of the 100th birth anniversary of Victor Hambardzumyan held its first session at the Office of Government, which on behalf of Commission Chairman, RA Prime Minister Serzh Sargsyan was chaired by RA Vice-Prime Minister, Minister of Territorial Administration Hovik Abrahamyan.
The commission has discussed a draft program of events dedicated to the 100th anniversary of Victor Hambardzumyan. It has been noted that the UNESCO has declared 2008 to be the Year of Hambardzumyan and therefore the anniversary actions will bear an international character. In particular, it is envisaged to hold an international symposium referred to as "Active phenomena and the evolution of spatial objects," a scientific session of the RA NAS. Researcher delegations will be fielded to participate in the joint sessions of the General Physics Department of the RF NAS, St. Petersburg
's University and the Pulkovo Observatory, dedicated to V. Hambardzumyan. A second international school of young astrophysicists devoted to V. Hambardzumyan's scientific legacy is due to be held involving about 30 prominent foreign researchers. In addition, readings and an academic session will be held on V. Hambardzumyan's scientific legacy at the YSU physics and radio-physics departments for senior students.A commemorative book on the eminent scientist will be issued along with reprints of his popular-science articles and the list of his research works. The second issue of 2008 of "World of Science" review will be entirely devoted to the 100th anniversary of V. Hambardzumyan. Anniversary publications and broadcasts will be released by mass media outlets, a website dedicated to V. Hambardzumyan will be available online and a DVD disc narrating on the life and activity of the renowned scientist. Several large-scale events will be held in the marzes, including in Gegharkunik marz which is place of birth of V. Hambardzumyan.
Some of the program events seek to perpetuate the name of the world-famous scientist. In particular, it is envisaged to install V. Hambardzumyan
's bust in front of the YSU observatory, as well as to launch a special V. Hambardzumyan award. A commemorative coin and a jubilee stamp will be issued on the anniversary.In September 2008, a gala event dedicated to the 100th anniversary of V. Hambardzumyan will be held at the National Academic Opera and Ballet Theater after A. Spendiaryan.
Following discussion, the draft program will be submitted to the chairman of the anniversary commission for approval.
