Today the Board of Trustees of Republic of Armenia Reforestation and Forest Development Fund has held its first meeting chaired by Board Chairman, RA Prime Minister A. Margaryan. The Board includes Ministers, the whole body of Marz Governors, the Mayor of Yerevan and non-governmental organizations concerned.

The meeting has discussed the Nork Forest Rehabilitation Project as proposed by the Ministry of Agriculture on Prime Minister's recommendation. This is one of the components of a general program for forest restoration in the capital city. At the next meeting, the Board will discuss an AMD300mln-worth program for the rehabilitation of wooded areas in Yerevan city and in Kotayk Marz. The Nork Forest Rehabilitation Project-Proposal has the chief objective of creating health-inducive environment and recreational facilities through reforestation measures to be implemented in Nork Saralandge district of Yerevan (56.7ha). The overall sanitary status and esthetical outlook of Yerevan, too, as well as the ecological balance are expected to be improved due to the above measures, which are also meant to protect the city against eventual landslides, windstorms, floods and other similar natural disasters.

The project provides for complex agro-engineering and engineering measures including the purchase of all necessary tools and equipment, the rehabilitation of the existing irrigation network, saplings- and plantation-related activities, as well as the fencing and caring for wooded areas and so on.

The projects is scheduled to be implemented in 2004-2005. Afforestation activities will cover an area of 45ha and rehabilitation
