Today RA Prime Minister A. Margaryan has received the participants of the 9th Yerevan international symposium on constitutional justice. The Prime Minister welcomed this traditionally held event as initiated by the joint efforts of the Venice Commission of the Council of Europe and RA Constitutional Court and expressed the hope that on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the RA Constitutional Court the participants of this event will be back to Armenia again in 2005. The Prime Minister noted that, to promote cross-country experience sharing, regular discussions ought to be held between representatives from international organizations and constitutional courts of different countries over constitutional matters, including issues bearing on the system of constitutional judiciary.
By mentioning that in close cooperation with the Venice Commission and other EC structures our country was striving to fulfill the commitments assumed upon accession to the Council of Europe, the Prime Minister emphasized the necessity of in-depth constitutional reforms. He said to be hopeful that these commitments, which were crucial to Armenia in respect of promoting democracy and improving public welfare in the country, would have been fully met by the deadlines set.
Apart from a reference made to the process of European integration, asked by the guests, Mr A. Margaryan briefed them on the current status of the Armenian economy, economic policies implemented in our country, the priorities outlined, the cooperation between the executive and legislative branches of power. He further touched upon such issues of regional concern as might be relevant to the Armenian economy.
Mr G. Haroutiunyan, President of RA Constitutional Court, briefed the head of government on symposium proceedings, the topics under review and the plans for the future.
The members of the delegation assured the Prime Minister that the Venice Commission of the Council of Europe would back the Armenian authorities through continued cooperation. They expressed the hope that the existing conflicts would be settled soon to provide for a lasting peace in the region.
