National sustainable development council’s meeting
National Sustainable Development Council met today at the Office of Government, chaired by council head, Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan.
Council Secretary, President of “Association for Sustainable Human Development” NGO Karine Danielyan reported on the current status of the UN-launched Rio+20 global campaign and Armenia’s contribution to the process. In particular, she touched on the agenda of the 2012 global sustainable development summit to be held in Rio de Janeiro and treated questions of Armenia’s participation in the summit.
In turn, Head of Foreign Ministry’s International Organizations Department Vahram Kazhoyan reported on the agenda, as well as on the proposals and conclusions formulated at the United Nations Sustainable Development Commission, convened on February 28 – March 4 in New York.
The speakers made a point of developing Armenia’s national action plan for Rio+20. In this connection, the head of government instructed to set up an interagency commission to deal with the design and follow-up monitoring of Armenia’s action plan on global, regional, national and local levels.
The council next was presented with the Second National Communication on climate change in Armenia (SNC) (the electronic version of the communication is posted on the website of the Climate Change Information Center: www.nature-ic.am).
Coordinator of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Aram Gabrielyan reported on the key climate change-related challenges for different sectors of the Armenia’s economy. In this context, the speaker referred to such measures as may be needed to respond to possible threats.
Wrapping up the meeting, the council approved the list of proposed actions and noted that they will be included in the functions of the Ministry of Nature Protection.
