Prime Minister Attends Red Book Presentation
Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan attended the presentation of Armenia’s first-ever bilingual Red Book at the National Academy of Sciences. The event was also attended by Minister of Nature Protection Aram Haroutunyan, NAS President Radik Martirosyan, representatives from Armenian research institutes and international organizations.
During the presentation, director of Armenia’s Zoological and Hydro-Ecological Center Gagik Sarkisov and director of the Institute of Botany by the NAS of Armenia Zhirair Vardanyan were awarded with the Prime Minister’s commemorative medals. Coordinator of the Red Book’s research group Mark Kalashyan and Head of the YSU Chair of Botany Eleonora Gabrielyan were awarded with the gold medal of the Ministry of Nature Protection.
Having a legal status and strong with its 500 printed copies, this first Red Book of Armenia has been compiled based on the findings of field surveys conducted in 2007-2009. The Book was approved for printing on January 29, 2010. It features some 452 kinds of plants, 40 kinds of mushrooms and 308 species of animals of which 153 are vertebrate and 155 non-vertebrate.
