Numerous State Functions To Be Handed Over To Local Self-Government Authorities
As part of local self-government 15th anniversary celebrations, a two-day conference started in Yerevan, entitled “Local self-government in Armenia: achievements, problems and prospects.” The conference seeks to take a retrospective look at the achievements and failures of the system of local self-government.
Welcoming the participants on behalf of the Government, Prime Minister Sargsyan considered it symbolical that the event is held in the year of Armenia’s independence 20th anniversary and the 15th anniversary of creation of institutions of local government in our country.
“Today we are trying to find the best model of local self-management to fit the global developments and create sound bases for full-fledged implementation of local self-government functionality,” the Prime Minister said.
Familiarizing with the materials of the conference, the head of government noted that sizeable work had been done over the past few years: strategy for ensuring independence of local self-government authorities, numerous laws and regulations, normative documents to streamline the organization of local government institutions.
Attaching importance to the study of international experience, Tigran Sargsyan expressed conviction that numerous State functions would be gradually handed over to local self-government authorities with a view to ensuring better, simpler and affordable services for the population.
“We should increase LSG capacity giving it additional opportunities for adequate exercise of powers,” the Premier noted hopeful that the forum might reveal new ways of development in this field.
