PM Holds Discussion On Literature Development Problems
Chaired by Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan, a consultation on literature development was held at newly opened Zangak literary center,
The meeting was attended by Minister of Culture Hasmik Poghosyan, Finance Minister Vache Gabrielyan, Deputy Finance Minister Suren Karayan, Deputy Minister of Education and Science Manuk Mkrtchyan, President of Armenian Writers’ Union Levon Ananyan, heads of large publishing houses, bookselling companies and other representatives of the literary sphere.
“Our ultimate goal is to make people start reading books again in the Republic of Armenia. We must solve this problem, if we are to secure a future for the Armenian nation. We need to instill a reading behavior in our children so that they become fond of reading as early as from the school. Moreover, we must focus on the home literature. The fiscal receipts generated in the book sector should help us achieve this important goal,” the Premier said adding that will be a direct subsidy for the cause of identity preservation and development of Armenian studies.
The Prime Minister proposed to develop a national concept of reading by setting up a public council to work out steps and actions for the development of this sphere..
Congratulating those present on the opening of Zangak literary center, Tigran Sargsyan stated in part, “I am happy that this event is taking place on the birthday of Yegishe Charents. We should ensure that Armenian citizens see their lives in the world of books. It will help them keep up with the developments of the modern world. It will prevent people from losing our cultural assets as literature is the best way to hand them down from generation to generation.”
Zangak literary center has a large stock of digitalized literature, digitalized versions of educational materials and other publishing materials. The concept of this center was developed based on the expertise of leading European bookstores which have a well-developed bookselling system.
