PM Receives High-Ranking UNESCO Officials
Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan received Chairperson of UNESCO 36th Conference, Hungary’s Permanent Representative to UNESCO Katalin Bogya and Deputy Director-General of UNESCO Getachev Endiga.
“We attach great importance to cooperation for a number of fundamental reasons. The first one has to do with the path covered by the Armenian nation. Armenians appreciate anything associated with our culture. As they fled the Genocide, our grandparents tried to save manuscripts instead of property as they were convinced that manuscripts were a pledge for our nation’s survival,” Tigran Sargsyan emphasized.
The Premier thanked the representatives of UNESCO for thoughtfulness of our country and the programs implemented together.
With reference to Azerbaijan’s stance at UNESCO proceedings, Tigran Sargsyan pointed out that the neighboring country is trying to use the platform for discrediting Armenia rather than for promoting a dialog. “UNESCO should serve as a platform of dialog and those attempts of Azerbaijan should be prevented,” Tigran Sargsyan stressed reminding that numerous Armenian stele have been barbarically destroyed in Nakhichevan by Azerbaijani authorities, which is a crime against mankind.
Highlighting the need for a dialog, the guests assured that UNESCO will continue caring for the conservation of cultural heritage. Deputy Director-General of UNESCO Getachev Endiga thanked the Armenian authorities for consistency in the preservation of cultural values and close cooperation.
In conclusion, reference was made of the events held in the framework of “Yerevan World Book Capital – 2012” project.
