Gyumri Officially Assumes Title of CIS Cultural Capital
On June 30, Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan attended a festive event held in connection with Gyumri being awarded the title of cultural capital of the CIS in 2013.
A concert was held at Vardanants Square of Gyumri, during which Mayor of Gyumri Samvel Balasanyan was handed a certificate acknowledging Gyumri as the cultural capital of the CIS in 2013.
Some 45 events will be held under the program. The official closing of the program is scheduled for November 2.
The event was also attended by Minister of Culture Hasmik Poghosyan, Chairman of CIS Executive Committee – Deputy Executive Secretary Toktasyn Buzubayev, Executive Director of CIS Interstate Fund for Humanitarian Cooperation Armen Smbatyan, foreign delegations, representatives of diplomatic missions, numerous residents of Gyumri.
Gyumri was proclaimed CIS cultural capital at the Ashgabat meeting of CIS Council of Heads of State of December 5, 2012.
The CIS Cultural Capitals interstate program was launched in 2010 at the initiative of the CIS Council for Humanitarian Cooperation and the Interstate Fund for Humanitarian Cooperation.
The “Gyumri - CIS cultural capital in 2013” interstate program is co-funded by the CIS Interstate Fund for Humanitarian Cooperation, the Government of Armenia, the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Armenia and the Town Hall of Gyumri.
