Prime Minister Calls For Legal Study Of Turkish Government’s Unilateral Decision To Build Reservoirs On Rivers
Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan attended the presentation of the first Armenian Annual Bulletin of Comparative Law, international information site www.karabakhfacts.am and an annual scientific conference, devoted to the discussion of legal issues of foreign policy of the Republic of Armenia in the Conference Room of the Government of the Republic of Armenia.
Welcoming the implementation of these works by the Center for International and Comparative Law, Tigran Sargsyan noted the importance of conducting multifaceted studies concerning our country from the perspective of comparative law.
“This problem is especially relevant to us, given the challenges faced by our young nation. We should consider other issues in addition to the Nagorno-Karabakh problem in terms of comparative law, because today we come across with numerous other issues. Today important is the effective use of water resources, given the fact that sizeable portion of these resources are formed on the territory of modern Turkey. In particular, the government of this country has taken a unilateral decision to allocate USD20bn for construction of reservoirs on the rivers, which have great impact on the Ararat valley resources. According to experts, we will have serious problems with irrigation systems in the Ararat valley in a couple of years,” the Prime Minister said.
In this regard, according to the Prime Minister, Armenia can make use of specific legal tools to defend its national interests. In particular, it is necessary to identify such international treaties, conventions and documents as may help us promote our interests with the in international bodies. According to the Head of Government, reference is also being made of treaties signed in Soviet era.
“The second problem, which remains in the field of legal research, is the construction of new nuclear power plant, in connection with which we must take into account the observations of the neighboring States before construction. In particular, we need serious legal support to rule out any future barriers to the construction of the new unit,” Tigran Sargsyan said.
In Tigran Sargsyan’s words, there are numerous similar problems of regional significance to discuss. According to the Head of Government, violation of international obligations in the field of armaments by the neighboring State needs serious study.
Tigran Sargsyan welcomed the efforts of young researchers and encouraged them to continue the ongoing activities in this direction.
The first annual Armenian International Bulletin of Comparative Law presents legal issues related to Armenia, while www.karabakhfacts.am information website gives everyone the opportunity to get an objective idea of the Nagorno- Karabakh problem.
