Net-cell facilities will be set up to rebuild trout stocks in Lake Sevan 50 thousand tons of fish will be produced annually over the first ten years of program implementation
To restore trout stocks in Lake Sevan and implement the complex program introduced by the Fishery Development Council, the Government adopted a relevant decree at today’s Cabinet sitting.
Currently trout has no natural self-reproduction possibility. Two of its four subspecies - the Winter Trout and Bojak are deemed to be extinct, while Gegharkuni and the Summer Trout have survived in very small numbers.
Starting 2004, under various government programs aimed at restoring fish populations, a certain number of fry is let off into Lake Sevan every year. However, it is not enough to save Gegharkuni and the Summer Trout as fish species.
An effective solution to the problem could be the Government’s decision which provides that there is a need to develop and approve the placement of net-cell farms in accordance with the amount of allowable emissions, the monitoring procedure and so on.
It is expected that 50 thousand tons of fish will be produced annually over the first ten years of program implementation to a total cost of about AMD175billion. 1.5% of net-cell holdings’ annual profit should be made available to the Fund for acquisition of additional fry to restore stocks of trout in Lake Sevan.
Some 2.5 -3 thousand new jobs are due to be created under the trout development program, with 5-6 thousands jobs expected throughout the whole circuit. Extra funds will be generated to address the Sevan Basin’s problems. Armenian Harvest Promotion Center CJSC is designed to be the program manager.
