Children’s issues in spotlight

Prime Minister Hovik Abrahamyan received United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) representative in Armenia Manja Henriette Ahrens.

Hovik Abrahamyan hailed the UN Children’s Fund for advocating children’s rights, improving their health and living conditions in Armenia. “Children are the Government’s focus and, in this regard, I would like to thank you for those numerous programs implemented in our country. My government is committed to tackling all the problems over time, so we will continue to assist the Fund with the implementation of each initiative,” he said.

Highlighting the strategy of taking children back to biological and foster families, the Prime Minister stressed that the unloading of orphanages is among his government’s priorities. Welcoming the Government’s effort in this direction, Henriette Ahrens children’s issues are given a special emphasis in the Government's new program.

The UNICEF representative advised that Yerevan will be hosting UNICEF Central and Eastern Europe coordinators’ annual meeting in the month of October, at which the next five-year program of joint action with Armenia shall be discussed.

At the same time, Henriette Ahrens said the main focus will be the repatriation of orphanage inmates and their social problems.

Hovik Abrahamyan assured that he would keep in focus the implementation of all agreements reached with the UNICEF.
