Energy Sector Development Prospects Discussed

Chaired by Prime Minister Hovik Abrahamyan, an analytical discussion was held today on Armenia’s energy sector. In attendance were the heads of stakeholder agencies and the representatives of the World Bank.

Noting that energy is an important sector of Armenia’s economy, the Prime Minister highlighted the role of the World Bank’s technical support in this respect.

Thanking the Government for effective cooperation, World Bank Country Director Henry Kerali introduced the findings of a recent survey carried out by the Bank.

Mr. Kerali stressed that great progress has been made over the past 15 years and the reform should be continued into the second stage by means of specific projects implemented in this field.

The WB representatives, who have done a comprehensive survey of the energy sector, reported back their findings, including the achievements and the problems, as well as the steps to take in the face of possible challenges.

The meeting discussed issues related to energy security, reliability of electricity supply and the introduction of new infrastructure. The importance of public-private sector cooperation was emphasized in this context.

Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Yervant Zakharyan said an integrated development program is being worked out under the Prime Minister’s instructions due to be submitted by this yearend.

Summing up the debate, Hovik Abrahamyan thanked the Bank for cooperation, stressing that his government seeks to ensure a sustainable energy system in the country.

The World Bank Regional Director reiterated the Bank’s willingness to continue providing technical assistance and advice to the Government of Armenia.
