Today the ceremony of signing the UN Development Support Program was held in the Office of Government, which is a five-year (2005-2009) cooperation plan for the UN agencies operating in Armenia. The document was signed by Prime Minister A. Margaryan for Armenia and by UN Resident Coordinator and Permanent Representative Lise Grande for the UN.
The program was drafted in response to the appeal made by the Armenian government and the civil society for the promotion of the all-national goals set out in the Poverty Reduction Strategic Program. It is based on the achievements had by the government and the civil society and was developed in the light of the targets and strategy specified in the PRSP and the Millenium Development Goals. It is for the first time a program like this has been designed for Armenia to set up a common framework of activities for the UN agencies operating in our country. The program will be carried out through tripartite socially-oriented partnership between the RA government, the UN agencies and the civil society, including the public sector as necessary. In view of the fact that the success of the program will be largely dependent on ensuring continued monitoring and coordination thereof, a Program Coordination Unit is scheduled to be established under the UN Resident Coordinator and Permanent Representative, which will be responsible for the coordination of all the components of the monitoring and overall evaluation system to be introduced at the first stage of program implementation.
Developed and finalized under the leadership of the Armenian government in close cooperation with the civil society and several organizations involved in development processes underway in Armenia, this document, according to Mrs. Lise Grande, has been received with great enthusiasm at UNDP
