Government Discusses Aviation Development Agenda

Prime Minister Hovik Abrahamyan chaired a meeting, which discussed progress and prospects of Armenia’s aviation sector reforms. The meeting was attended by representatives from Armenia offices of international donor organizations - USAID, World Bank, International Monetary Fund - as well as Armenia Development Initiatives (IDeA) charitable foundation and government agencies.

The meeting discussed a wide range of issues related to the Government’s “open skies” policy. After reviewing the work done by the Government of Armenia in cooperation with donor organizations toward developing Armenia’s aviation industry, the meeting discussed the proposed joint measures.

Particular importance was attached to the development of a specific action plan and timetable for the “open skies” policy, implementation of coordinated public awareness campaigns, tourism strategy and so on.

Stressing that the Government is endeavoring to ensure increased competition in the air market, invite new carriers, improve the legislative framework, the Prime Minister pointed to the need for the donor community to support the ongoing reforms by involving international experts and providing human resource training.

Hailing the Government’s drive for the promotion of tourism and development of aviation industry, the representatives of international organizations expressed willingness to back the steps taken by the Executive in specific components of the reform process.

Summing up the discussion, Hovik Abrahamyan stressed the importance of such meetings as they help enhance the efficiency of cooperation. The Premier thanked the representatives of international donor agencies for their willingness to support the Government and assured of his firm determination to implement the agreements reached.
