PM Attends Presentation of Millennium Development Goals Progress Report
Prime Minister Hovik Abrahamyan attended today the presentation of Armenia’s national progress report on Millennium Development Goals. In his opening speech, the Head of Government noted that Armenia’s national report summarizes the efforts made by Armenia toward the implementation of the UN program of Millennium Development Goals, which was adopted in 2000.
According to Hovik Abrahamyan, Armenia boasts tangible progress in the prevention of child and maternal mortality, access to education, clean water. In terms of other objectives, perhaps there is some progress, but still a lot of work has to be done; we need to continue to make sustained efforts to improve the relevant indicators.
“The National Sustainable Development Council held a regular meeting last week, which ushered in the launch of the process of localization of the United Nations’ new program, referred to as “Transforming the world: a new agenda for 2030.” The new agenda features 17 sustainable development goals and 169 targets. Armenia has to pick out those goals and targets consonant with our national strategic programs, including the 2014-2025 program of Armenia’s strategic development. Finally, no matter what the name of a new program or target is: all we want is to provide a prosperous, peaceful and prosperous life for our citizens, which necessitates consistent and hard work on the part of public institutions, NGOs and international organizations,” Prime Minister said.
The Head of Government thanked the UN Armenia Office for assistance, as well as all those government agencies and individuals that attended the preparation of the report. The Premier expressed confidence that cooperation between Armenia and the United Nations will be strengthened ahead.
A statement was also made by UN Resident Coordinator Bradley Busetto. As he said, the UN is prepared to assist the government of Armenia in its efforts aimed at streamlining and coordinating the implementation of the “Transforming the world: a new agenda for 2030” program. According to Mr Busetto, success will be dependent not only on per-sector and per-agency planning of activities, bur also on the commitment of the whole society: Parliament, civil society, private sector and mass media.
In conclusion, experts from EV Consulting Sevak Hovhannisyan and Gagik Gabrielyan introduced the main results of Armenia’s Millennium Development Goals progress report.
