UN Rio +20 Summit on Sustainable Development Coordinator, Deputy Chief of Government Staff Tigran Gevorgyan said an unprecedented event had been organized in parallel to the Summit, referred to as “Sustainable Development Index methodology.”
“The United Nations is keen on in all of its structures to have a methodology like that. The methodology has been appreciated by all stakeholders, including our opponents,” Tigran Gevorgyan emphasized in his remarks.
“A well-balanced document was developed and presented at the UN Rio +20 Summit on Sustainable Development, which represented the actual situation in Armenia covering all the challenges faced at this stage,” First Deputy Minister of Nature Protection Simon Papyan noted at the July 10 meeting with journalists.
As early as in June, 2011, a commission was established on the Prime Minister’s instructions to carry out preparatory work ahead of the Summit: “Five different panels had been set up to develop Armenia’s national report, which was supposed to represent the last two decades’ achievements, as well as the existing problems and shortfalls,” he said.
According to Mr. Papyan, the report consists of four chapters, which outline the challenges faced by Armenia and the ways to solve them. “We had the opportunity to compare our report with the those of other countries and make sure that Armenia’s report proved of general interest,” he said.
UN Resident Coordinator Dafina Gercheva said for 40 years now mankind has been looking for a sustainable development model. The Summit raised the problem, providing a unique opportunity to state a breakthrough in our efforts and ensure a shift toward a dynamic, equitable and functional model. During the event, USD 510mn was pledged for energy saving and environmental purposes. I can witness that Armenia was given a proper representation at Rio+20,” Dafina Gercheva concluded.
