Sustainable School Catering Program To Kick Off In 2014
“The Sustainable School Catering program’s strategy has the chief objective to shape a sustainable school catering system, provide healthy food for elementary classes of secondary schools nationwide,” Minister of Education and Science Armen Ashotyan told the news conference which was held today at the press center of the Government of the Republic of Armenia.
The program is starting next year in Vayots-Dzor province to cover all the regions of Armenia by 2021, including Yerevan. In accordance with the recommended calorie intake, schoolchildren will be given 200 ml of dairy products or juice, and one roll daily. The program will boost domestic farming as all food products will be procured locally.
The program will be supervised by the Ministry of Education and Science, with the quality control and food safety functions, as well as the development of raw material base to be ensured by the Ministry of Agriculture. The Ministry of Healthcare will develop and enforce a set of rules and regulations referred to as “Hygienic requirements for student catering in secondary schools.”
