Four Reservoirs to be Built in Order to Solve Irrigation Problems
The Government has adopted a bill today on making amendments to the “RA Law on restoration and protection of Lake Sevan’s ecosystem". According to the bill the volume of water pumped out from the lake is to be increased from the current 170 million to 240 million cubic meters per year, until January 1, 2019, depending on the water supply of Hrazdan, Aparan, Azat, Marmarik reservoirs.
Speaking at the press conference held at the RA Government press center after the Cabinet sitting, Head of the State Committee of Armenian Water Industry Andranik Andreasyan noted that the adoption of the project is due to the shortage of water observed in some regions of the Ararat Valley in the recent years, as well as the nessesity to ensure the irrigation of those lands.
According to him, a number of measures will be taken in the coming years in order to solve the exisiting problem, in particular, four major water reservoir cunstruction programs will be implemented. “The increase in water level recorded at Lake Sevan and the prospect of the upcoming measures gives us hope to assume that we will be able to overcome the problem by 2019,” said Mr. Andreasyan.
